Friendly reminder that heterophobia/misandry/reverse racism will never have the same power as its counterparts.

And if you are ignorant enough to believe it does then you completely erase and ignore the centuries of suffering, genocide, and prejudice oppressed groups had and are still dealing with.

Because hurt feelings (genuine or not) =/= institutionalized oppression

I think we could actually go a step further and say that “heterophobia”/”misandry”/”reverse racism” are not actually things. If we want to give those sentiments a name, it should be “completely legitimate resentment against being systemically oppressed”.

Just sayin!

I’m not in your class, I’m actually not taking any this summer. I just saw the chance to recommend Professor Gayle to a fellow HWC student, haha :) She also teaches an awesome African History seminar (but it’s not offered every semester), and in the fall is a teaching a class called ‘Women and Work in US History’. Wish I was going to be at HWC in the fall to take it, because the other two classes I’ve taken with her were great.

Best of luck with finishing the Speech class… and I would try to call out the Professor’s racism whenever possible. My experience in classes focusing on Black history is that students are sometimes reluctant to call out racism/white supremacy for what they are (probably thinking they’ll be accused of ‘reverse-racism’), and I think seeing a classmate say something can give them more confidence to.

If you’re against feminism as a movement because of it’s tendencies to exclude trans* women and WOC, that’s totally legitimate.

But if you’re against it because you think it’s wrong to focus on women’s equality because it “ignores the men” then you let me come live in your universe where men are in need of having their rights protected because I’d like to see that shit.

Right quick, just want to add some clarifications:

If a movement for [proclaimed] liberation has problematic elements, rather than be against it I strongly encourage us all to take part in the movement in order to actively fight and root out those elements. History shows us that a set of splintered and un-cooperating movements are going to be much less successful in winning gains than a united one that does not exclude certain groups (if you don’t believe me read this book by Angela Davis).
Men’s rights technically ARE in need of protection, because men are also people of color, GBTQ, immigrants, and workers, all of whose rights are under attack. However men do NOT experience oppression on the basis of gender by a system which gives women privileges over men, as these so-called “men’s rights activists” claim.
